Goal 2035

Helsinki should encourage locals to favour the sharing economy for several reasons

Sustainable development

The sharing economy contributes to sustainable development by reducing the need to produce new products. When people share their resources, such as vehicles, tools or housing, it reduces consumption and the use of raw materials, which in turn reduces environmental impact and carbon footprint.

Economic benefits:

The sharing economy can bring economic benefits to both individuals and the community. When people share resources, it can lead to savings, such as lower transportation costs, when more than one person uses the same vehicle. In addition, new job opportunities and economic activity can be created locally through sharing economy services or products.

Community

Sharing economy can promote community and neighbor help. When people share their resources with each other, it creates opportunities for interaction and collaboration. The sharing economy has often emphasized community values and building networks, which can strengthen local communities and create social capital.

Flexibility and versatility

The sharing economy provides people with access to a variety of resources and services that they may not own themselves. This increases flexibility and versatility in people's lives. For example, through the sharing economy, you can get to try different ways of moving or take advantage of more special tools or devices that do not need to be owned permanently.

It is difficult to give an accurate figure of how much carbon footprint could be reduced if one in two Helsinki residents used the sharing economy. The carbon footprint depends on many factors, such as people's consumption habits, and the impact of the sharing economy varies between different resources and services.

However, the sharing economy can have a significant positive impact on the carbon footprint. Sharing resources, such as cars or homes, reduces the need to produce new products and increases the use of existing resources. This can lead to savings in energy and raw materials, as well as a reduction in emissions.

For example, if one in two Helsinki residents shared their cars or used more public transport and sharing economy services such as carpooling or car rental services, traffic emissions could be significantly reduced. Similarly, if one in two Helsinki residents shared their apartments or used accommodation services such as Airbnb, it could reduce the need for new buildings and thus reduce the emissions caused by buildings..
